Name: New Words and Meanings Reflected in Poetic Quotes (On the Contextual Component of the “Dictionary of the Russian Language” Edited by N. S. Derzhavin)

Abstract:

The article reflects the initial stage of dictionary compilation of the project of lexico-graphic description of the corpus of Russian neologisms of the first third of the twentieth century. The Dictionary of the Russian language edited by N. S. Derzhavin (1929–1937) is characterized as one of the sources of the project dictionary. The peculiarities of the contextual component of the edition, which was significantly updated by adding the quotations from the new poetry of the 1920s and 1930s, are revealed. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the composition of quotations of the two issues is carried out. It is established that the main new sources of poetic quotations of the dictionary are the works of Demyan Bedny and V. Mayakovsky; the circle of other authors of new poetic quotations is revealed. The main functions of the poetic quotation are analyzed on the material of nine issues of the dictionary: to justify the inclusion of a new word or meaning, to show the belonging of the word to the modern language, to reflect the author’s new formation fixed with the help of the interpretation component “met at...”, to reflect the updating of the figurative structure of the language. It is established that a new quotation is often a marker of a new word, new meaning, change of semantics, and the process of actualization of word usage.
