Abstract: It is generally assumed that Polish verbal nouns are derived from the vast majority of verbs, and almost entirely inherit their aspectual semantics (aspect and actionsart). However, a solid analysis of data from the National Corpus of Polish and comparing them with the materials of Polish dictionaries refute this assumption. It is proved in this paper that in the Polish language there are groups of verbs, the aspectual semantics of which systemically prevents them from nominalization. Based on the materials of the dictionaries of the Polish language, the present paper discusses some theoretical aspects of the verbal noun derivation in the Polish language, analyzes the grammatical status of the Polish verbal noun, investigates the influence of the aspectual semantics of delimitative verbs on their productivity with reference to verbal nouns. The semantic feature which would flatly not coincide with the noun form and which, therefore, prevents the transposition of a verb into a noun, or, otherwise, is lost in the course of nominalization, is the presence of a quantitative-temporal limit of the action denoted in the verb’s semantics.

Keywords: verbal noun of action, aspectual semantics, quantitative-temporal limit of the action
