Abstract: Nowadays, the verbal culture of Siberian region in its historical development is actively studied by the researchers at Tomsk State University as well as at other universities of Siberia and Russia. The important part of this study is investigating the reception of the foreign literature in the Siberian periodicals at the turn of XIX–XX centuries. At that time, a lot of original literary translations from German, English, French and other languages appeared on the pages of periodicals. The paper is devoted to the reception of the work of Fridrich Bodenstedt (1819–1892), a well-known poet and popularizer of Russian literature in Germany. The main object of this paper is a literary and contrastive analysis of the reverse translations of Lermontov’s poems from German, created in the Siberian and Moscow cultural environments. Also, the author aims at identifying the reception strategies of the Siberian authors when dealing with F. Bodenshtedt’s heritage (a poet, translator, and orientalist). The research material includes four publications from one of the largest daily newspapers in Tomsk – «Siberian Bulletin» (1885–1905). The first publication is the article about the meaning of eye color, written by a Siberian translator and essay writer P. Chernevich, where F. Bodenstedt is mentioned as an orientalist and translator of Mirza Shafi works from Azerbaijani. Also, the author studies two noteworthy poems of Lermontov preserved only in German in the translation of Bodenstedt, published in the Siberian periodicals as well. The well-known Siberian translator Ivan Severnyy published his own translations of the Lermontov’s poems from German. The reception of the original work of Bodenstedt as a poet is expressed only by one pseudotranslation created by the Siberian author Georgiy Vyatkin, reflecting his own style of translator rather than the original heritage of the German poet. The Vyatkin’s poem is written in the genre of civil lyrics that was not typical for the poetry of Bodenstedt. The paper ends with conclusions about a complete picture of reception of Bodenstedt’s work in the Siberian periodicals, representing him as a poet, a translator from Russian and Azerbaijani, and as a researcher of Russian and Orient culture
