Аннотация: Статья описывает современные подходы к фольклору в североамериканской научной традиции. Обсуждаются понятия «фольклор» и «жанр», принятые среди североамериканских специалистов, и чем отличаются их трактовка от европейской традиции. Рассматривается развитие фольклористики в ХХ в. в Северной Америке. Показано, что критика формально-структурных подходов в 1970-х гг. привела к возникновению разных методик, где по-новому понимался термин «идентичность» и то, как фольклор ее отражает. Обсуждаются статьи в недавних изданиях журнала Общества американского фольклора. Автор показывает, как в текущей научной работе фольклористов Северной Америки продолжаются споры о понятиях «фольклористика» и «фольклор» и вырабатываются новые подходы.
