ArticleName: The work written by Metropolitan Eugene Bolkhovitinov about Georgia Authors: Bagration-Mukhranely Irina Leonidovna Moscow State University of Psychology and Education, Moscow, Russian Federation In the section Study of literature
Abstract: Considered in the present paper are two country-specific books by Metropolitan Eugene Bolkhovitinov: (1) a burlesque, humorous description of a travel to the Mount Parnassus and its vicinities (1788), and (2) quite a serious work, the first investigation into the history, church, literature and culture of Georgia in Russian. In 1802 he wrote and published an anonymous book, «Historical representation of Georgia in its political, church and educational condition». In this work Metropolitan Eugene relied on particulars provided to him by personalities from the Georgian emigration in Russia, and chiefly by Bishop Varlam Eristov. The book contains information on the history of Georgian music, literature and prosody, in particular on the oeuvre of Sh. Rustaveli. Bolkhovitinov was also the first to start translating «The Knight in the Panther’s Skin» into Russian.
