Abstract: The paper presents the first shot at comprehending the idea of German ecclesiastical literature of German Protestantism in the religious reading coterie of V.A. Zhykovsky in 1840s. Analysis is performed of the notes made by Zhykovsky in the books while reading the works by H. Muller, H. Nitsch, and F. Oetinger. The pietistic literature is found to have exerted influence on the late literary works of the first Russian romanticist.
