Abstract: The paper investigates the genesis and formation of provincial stories. At first the author considers the interconnection of the provincial plots with the three main sources: Russian comedial, publicistic, and prosaic works of late Sentimentalists and Romanticists. Analysis of these spheres makes it possible to identify the main processes in the formation of the plots under investigation: metonymy and metaphor, parody, and reduction. In conclusion it is stated that provincial stories as a united structure were preparing the provincial text of the Russian 19th century literature.

Keywords: russian literature, provincial story, writing of comedies, sentimentalism, romanticism
