Abstract: The paper considers the identity formula «brother» which is fundamental for V. Makanin’s art, and which is represented in his novel «Underground, or the Hero of our time» as a figure of rhetoric, as a social mask, and as an ideal model of the «other». The character, the man-Proteus, conducts a test on his «I» for identification compatibility with Others and with «texts» of Russian literature, coming eventually to understanding the responsibility for the interpretation of the world.
