Abstract: The paper deals with the authorbiography of the Irkutsk archbishop Veniamin II (Blagonravov). This text, written at the end of the 19th century, has not yet been studied philologically. Based on this text, the paper raises the question of the church autobiography as a special phenomenon of Russian literature comparable to the secular autobiography and at the same time distinct from it. Notably, the paper pays special attention to the ways of the author's self-objectivication and self-appraisal, and establishes their dependence on the hagiographical tradition of depicting a person and on the general features of Christian consciousness.
