Abstract: G. Hauptmann's works are a rather rare example of interest to comediography for a "new drama" at the turn of XIX–XX century. The article presents a review of Hauptmann's comedies' critical reception in Russia which reflects the specificity of this genre's perception by his contemporaries and assists the understanding of such a remarkable phenomenon as Anton Chekhov's comediography.
