ArticleName: Translatability and variability of a text from the perspective of the antinomy of “identity and difference” Authors: Nikolai D. Golev, Galina V. Napreenko Kemerovo State University, Kemerovo, Russian Federation In the section Linguistics
Abstract: Translational linguistics, a special direction in the study of natural languages, interprets translation as a method of revealing the properties of a language in translational functioning. This paper describes the ontological identity/difference antinomy as a mechanism of language development in the synchronous variantological paradigm. Given that any object, when compared with another, features both identity and difference, the study aims to identify the range of acceptable variation of features that bring the object closer to the invariant or away from it. Reverse machine translation (RTT) is proposed as a way of studying the patterns of natural language in the mirror of its variability and as an objective and reproducible method for describing the units of the language field. A hypothesis is put forward that studying the Russian text in the mirror of translation makes it possible to identify special language features that can be parameters for identifying identity and difference. The RTT study is conducted within the framework of synchronous variability and extends into the field of translational variantology. The authors provide historical background, review modern works on the embodiment of the antinomy in the language at its different levels, and correlate the identity and difference categories with those of variant and invariant.
