Abstract: The article presents the results of research on gender metaphors in terms of their modelling capacity. The research is carried out as part of the cognitive study of metaphors, in which metaphor is thought of as a cognitive world modelling mechanism. The subject matter of the analysis is gender metaphors – nominations of men and women that serve as means of marking «typically feminine» and «typically masculine» qualities based on a comparison between the phenomena of various conceptual categories. The peculiar characteristics of a person with no respect to gender and gender-marked characteristics are revealed. As the main sources of data for metaphor study the dictionaries of the English language are made use of. As a result, aspects of characteristics of a person, a man and a woman are revealed together with the basis of metaphorical comparison and source domains of metaphorical modelling. Comparative analysis of man’s and woman’s images that were formed in the system of gender metaphors in the English linguistic world view is carried out.

Keywords: conceptual metaphor, gender metaphor, gender unmarked metaphor, strictly gender marked metaphor, linguistic world view, target domain
