Abstract: This article contains the analysis of the semantic opposition of expected and unexpected. This opposition is the component of the opposition of the standard and nonstandard. The essence and the meaning of the expectation are considered from the point of view of the philosophical and linguistic conceptions. The constructions with the conjunctions AND, BUT as well as the statements of the modalities of the typical nature and the unpredictability.
