Abstract: The etymologists in majority agree that studying of the text simplifies the etymological analysis, providing a necessary context, which allows discovering of the inner form of the word and its meanings, sometimes rare or long ago forgotten. On the other hand, the text allows verifying of the results of etymological research. In this article offered one of possible concrete methods on the use of artistic text in etymology. We attempt to trace how V. Pelevin’s «Chapayev and Emptiness» realizes the motives, connected with the adjective empty in the novel.
