Abstract: In the artistic world of Shukshin there arises a distinct opposition: an alluring, but almost unattainable city Restaurant versus a democratic Rural Pub. The youth subculture of the post-thaw period was formed under the direct influence of the Western 20th century art. Vasily Shukshin mocks openly at the desire to behave oneself like the heroes of the novels by Hemingway and Remarque. In Shukshin’s works that parody the youth-confessional prose of the 1960s the chronotop of the restaurant is consistently linked with the motifs of hypocrisy, falseness, deception and self-deception. The Rural Pub, unlike the city restaurant, is the meeting place for closely related people who know one another well. In this chronotope the development of the storyline conflict necessarily involves the emergence of a stranger. The early Shukshinoriented to the poetics of socialist realism ascribes readily an ideological meaning to conflicts at the rural Pub. The writer’s later works display the tendency toward the mythologization of the restaurant incidents. The apogee of the restaurant chronotope semiotization in the works by Shukshin is the scene of a Sabbath from the film «Stoves and Benches».
