Abstract: The article concerns problems of interaction of the text and the image on an example «Julia, or New Heloise» by J.-J. Rousseau. The iconography of a plot it is considered on materials of four suites of the illustrations created by the French draughtsmen of XVIII century (H. Gravelot, J.-M. Moreau, K.-P. Marillier, N.-A. Monsiau). The subject situations of the novel are compared to illustrations in certain sequence. First of all, the novel text is compared with «plots of engravings » by Rousseau addressed to the illustrator. Then instructions of the writer are compared with the first illustrations to the novel (Gravelot). Further, the texts (of the novel, of the instructions) and the first illustrations are compared with later visual interpretations of the novel (Moreau, Marillier, Monsiau). Identities and distinctions of approaches by Rousseau and illustrators to plot visualisation are established on an example of one key episode of the novel («The First kiss of love»).
