Abstract:

The paper considers F. Sologub’s translations of the poems in prose by Ch. Baudelaire, whose writings laid the foundation for the French symbolism. French poems were comprehended through the lens of Sologub’s ideas on the concept of poetry and the roles of poet and reader. The transformations of the particular images and changes in focalization reveal the acts of aesthetic self-identity, unconsciously performed by Sologub in the process of translating the writing by the poet, whose ideas and aesthetics were shared by the translator.

Keywords: translation of fiction, interpretation, self-identity, symbolism, poem in pros, the image of poet, the concept of poetry, Sologub, Baudelaire
