Name: Discourse and Semiotic Analysis of Incongruity in Leonid Gaidai’s Cinematic Comedies of Khrushchev’s Thaw

Abstract:

The research aims to study the discursive-semiotic arrangement of incongruity which ensures event construal in L. Gaidai’s comedies. The article develops the analysis procedure which identifies the distribution of incongruity aligned and not aligned with euphemization in different discourse layers featuring the semiotic cues of their realization. The results specify the variance in the predominance of verbal and visual components mediated by both incongruity type and its discourse layer, as well as the significance of the sociocultural aspect in event construal in L. Gaidai’s thaw comedies.
