Abstract: The paper deals with the problem of “embedded story” in the light of historical narratology. The author argues that Ivan Turgenev’s novella “First Love” (1860) is a “modelling” text of Russian literature that determines “embedded story” as specifically a “love story”. Literary texts of various periods which, on the one hand, represent a unity of the framing and embedded stories, and, on the other hand, narrate a love story, refer to it on many levels. This hypothesis is proved by comparison with three other literary works: “Philip Vasilyevich’s Story” (1905) by M. Gorky, “Fiction. An Evening Story” (1906) by Z. Gippius, and the poem “From Moscow to the End of the Line” (1970) by Venedikt Erofeev.

Keywords: Ivan Turgenev, “First Love”, historical narratology, embedded story, narrative framing, M. Gorky, Z. Gippius, V. Erofeev
