Brief scientific biography

Irina Nevskaya studied Philology at Novokuznetsk State Pedagogical Institute (Russia) and earned her Candidate of Science (PhD) scientific degree in Turcology at Institute of Linguistics, Kazakh Academy of Sciences in 1990. In 1998, she earned her Doctor of Science degree at Institute of Philology, Russian Academy of Sciences in Languages of the Russian Federation. In 1998-1999, she was a guest researcher at Institute of Oriental Studies, Mainz University, with a Humboldt scholarship. In 2009-2019, she was an associate professor (Privatdozentin) in Turcology at Institute of Turcology (Freie Universität Berlin). Since 2019, she is an associate professor in Comparative Linguistics at Institute of Empirical Linguistics/Frankfurt University.

Since 2002, she has been a chief researcher of Institute of Philology, Russian Academy of Sciences. Prior to that, she was Professor of Novokuznetsk State Pedagogical Institute. She participated in a number of projects, mostly initiated by herself; e.g. at Orientinstitut (Istanbul), Institute of Turcology (Freie Universität Berlin), Institute of Turcology (Frankfurt University), Institute of Empirical Linguistics (Frankfurt University). As a result of those projects, a number of digital databases of endangered or historic languages of Eurasia has been created (vatec2.fkidg1.uni-frankfurt.de; www.shoriya.uni-frankfurt.de; www.altay.uni-frankfurt.de; http://www.mpi.nl/RELISH; http://tuyrki.weebly.com).

Irina Nevskaya has published about 200 books and scientific articles; she is a member of the editorial boards / deputy editor of various scientific journals (Turkic Languages (Germany), Russian Turcology (Russia), Turkic Studies Journal (Kazakhstan), Ural-Altaic Studies (Russia)); a member of the Scientific Council, Orientinstitut (Istanbul), acted as member in numerous scientific qualification commissions at Frankfurt University, Freie Universität Berlin, Uppsala University. She is an expert for various national and international scientific foundations. In 2018 she got a Vilhelm-Thomsen-Medal for research on Old Turkic, awarded by the International Turkic Academy; in 2021, she was awarded a Badge «Meyirim» of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan.

In the last 5 years:

1. In 2014-1019, she headed the project of international cooperation «Interaction of Turkic languages and cultures in post-Soviet Kazakhstan»; an Internet database on sociolinguistic situation of Turkic minorities of Kazakhstan was created as a result of the project; documentation of non-studied Turkish linguistic varieties was created; see the website of the project: tyurki.weebly.com. A number of articles have been published.

2. In 2015-2019, she continued a long-term work on documentation of runiform inscriptions in the Altai Republic, in the last three years by three-dimensional methods. All Altai inscriptions were documented by 3D methods, a number of inscriptions were deciphered thanks to 3D methods, mostly those discovered in the recent five years; a number of articles have been published.

3. In 2015-2020, she investigated a number of grammatical categories in the languages of Eurasia in typological and areal aspects: 1) the categories of prospective and proximative, which she discovered in Turkic languages; a collective monograph was published on this category in Turkic, Iranian and their contact languages «Prospective and Proximative in Turkic, Iranian and beyond»; 2) the category of depictive and resultative secondary predicates in Turkic languages of different branches; a number of articles resulted from this research; 3) the category of subjective evaluation, in particular, Turkic hypocorisms in a comparative perspective, non-canonical superlative constructions (a number of articles); 4) possession and ownership in the languages of Europe and North and Central Asia; a collective monograph; 5) ambiguity of verbal constructions of the structure: V-CV V-fin; this work has resulted in a collective monograph.

4. In 2015-2017, she investigated Turkic case systems from the point of view of their complexity; a number of articles and a collective monograph were created on the basis of this research.

5. In 2015-2019, she continued research and documentation of endangered Turkic languages in Russia and Kazakhstan, publication of archive materials (a number of articles).

6. In 2015-2017, she supervised the work of a group of Turcologists on a description of morphology of the Altai language and published the monograph «A Grammar of Modern Literary Altai. Morphology» as its editor-in-chief in 2017.
