Abstract:

The article deals with the intonation of dialogic speech in two Turkic idioms of Southern Siberia: Barabian and Chat. The research material consists of field recordings obtained by the authors from native Barabian and Chat speakers (more than 350 utterances in total). As recording high-quality authentic dialogic speech presents certain difficulties, the authors opted to use the map tasks method, a variant of information lag tasks. In our implementation of the method, the subjects were instructed to find out the missing information on pictures modified by covering some part of the image with multicolored ovals, which resulted in semi-structured spontaneous speech. Although the dialogues were limited to certain types of utterances, they were found to contain all the features characteristic of dialogical spontaneous speech, with presence of autocorrection, hesitation, interruptions, re-questionings, unfinished utterances and feedback markers indicating natural pragmatically oriented use of speech strategies to progress the dialogue. As a result of the analysis of the question and answer lines of the dialogue, common features of the Baraba and Chat intonation systems were described. While the narrative utterances can be characterized by final pitch declination, they often end with level or rising pitch signaling that that the intonation phrase has not been completed and the idea expressed is expected to be developed further. The intonation of special questions, which were the most frequent type of questions, was found to be dependent on the position of the interrogative word in a phrase, which is marked by high pitch value, thus adhering to the general strategy of marking focal components in these idioms.
