Abstract:

A prominent figure in general linguistics, language typology, and turkology, Maya Ivanovna Cheremisina (1924–2013) was born in Kiev on September 30, 1924. Her distinguished career included the positions of Doctor of Philology, Professor at Novosibirsk State University, and Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation. After graduating from the Faculty of Philology at Moscow State University in 1947, Maya Ivanovna continued her education by enrolling in a postgraduate program at V.P. Potemkin Moscow State Pedagogical University. Maya Ivanovna began her scientific career by studying figurative language in the satirical prose of M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin. The dissertation focused on the system of allegories found in the essays titled “Abroad.” Further scientific activity was related to solving fundamental linguistic problems in languages of different typological systems. The scientific and pedagogical achievements of Professor Cheremisina constitute a unique and irreplaceable heritage. Her scientific works are characterized as fundamental research and are widely known among scholars. Maya Ivanovna was the head of the Novosibirsk Syntactic School, which united researchers from the indigenous peoples of Siberia and scholars from Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Her pedagogical contributions were equally fruitful, guiding the defense of 55 dissertations, including six doctoral ones. The scientific and pedagogical contributions of Professor Cheremisina offer promising avenues for future research within the fields of typology and functional linguistics.
