Abstract: Koryak traditional mythological tales continue their existence, but the character system, the logic of the plot, the length of episodes in texts recorded from nomadic (Chavchuven) and coastal (Nymylan) Koryaks differ significantly. This publication provides a Chavchuven variant of the mythological tale “Whale”, written by a journalist Ekaterina Dedyk in the Koryak language in 2010. This Chavchuven text, as opposed to variants recorded from the coastal Koryaks, has the reduced character system; the author uses characters outside of the Koryak mythological tradition. We can also see the loss of some key episodes of the fairy tale, which resulted in the violation of the logic of the plot. The tale “Whale” in the mythology tradition of the coastal Koryaks is associated with premarital testing of a girl-bride and her preparation for marriage. The reincarnation bride > wild animal > wife is the basis for the development of the tale plot. In the Chavchuven variant, the theme of the premarital bride testing is completely absent. Instead of it, the author tells about the social inequality of characters, typical for the folklore tradition of the nomadic Koryaks. Thus, the mythological tale about daughters of the Big Raven partly converted into the social story. Nevertheless, some elements of the original mythological tale remained but without being included into the mythological cycle, these elements lost their internal logic. The narration becomes fragmented. In order to compensate the lack of narration logic, the author adds her own text episode that has no analogues in the Koryak folklore. The narration is full of details and expressive; that helps to strengthen social inequalities of characters and cause the reader sympathy. In the variant of the tale “Whale” written by Ekaterina Dedyk, the impact of Russian folklore also reflected: the happy end of the story depicts the transformation of a low male character after his marriage. The publication presents the original text in the Koryak language, translation into Russian, and morpheme-by-morpheme translation.
