Abstract: The paper discusses the metaphorical uses of syntactic constructions with typical spatial semantics in the text of collected didactic words «Paraenesis» by Ephraem Syrus (the copy dated to the 14th century). The author of the paper determines the range of meanings conveyed with the help of semantic transformation and describes the syntactical structures and types of spatial relations most commonly and universally used as a basis for metaphors in the text.
