Abstract: On the basis of vast source material it has been concluded that Patriarch Nikon understood re-consecration as a special ceremony of elevating one to the patriarchal chair; by his position he approved the significance of the Moscow Patriarchate, defended the universal character of the Moscow Patriarchdom, magnified the role of spiritual authority in society.
