Abstract: The paper covers the late, insufficiently studied work by one of the outstanding Russian literary men of the 18th century – the fairy tale «Bakhariana, or The Unknown» written in verse. The author retraces how organically M.M. Kheraskov makes use of a typically fairy-tale plot with adventures and transformations for an allegorical representation of spiritual self-perfection and moral regeneration of man.

Keywords: m.m. kheraskov, motif, allegory, fairy tale, epic poem, masonic literature
