Abstract: The adjective пустой in Russian is polysemantic and is at the top of a vast word-formation nest. Formally of the same root with this adjective in Modern Russian are the words пустить, пуща, пущий, пуще. The semantic relations within this nest are at present traced with difficulty. In the present paper an attempt is made to reveal semantic links between these words of presumably the same root by resorting to the system analysis of the Russian language.

Keywords: history of russian, word-formation nest, semantics, dialects of russian
