Abstract: The paper discusses the genre peculiarities of the ballads by Derzhavin and raises the issues as to the impact the aesthetic ideas of the late 18th and early 19th centuries have had on the author. The paper comprises analysis of the dominant motives and plot situations that are common to all ballads by Derzhavin.
