Abstract: The submitted article contains the interpretation of «Robinson Crusoe», a novel by Daniel Defoe. The hermeneutic key to the interpretation of this opus and its narrative-compositional model is the evangelical parable of a prodigal son. The author of the paper refers to the correlation of the following categories: home and way, land and water etc. The image of a human in Defoe’s novel reveals its dichotomy – he is either a hostage to blind fortune or a master of his own destiny. These axiological poles create dramatic suspense throughout the novel concerned.

Keywords: interpretation of the novel, d. defoe, robinson crusoe, prodigal son, reasoner, adventure and labour, nature and culture
