Abstract: The paper considers the widespread motif of transfiguring a human being into other creatures and the symbolism of numbers in fairy tales. The components taking part in the process of transfiguration are determined. They are: the transfiguring subject, the object of transfiguration and the means for accomplishing the process. Then, based on the texts of Buryat and Shor fairy tales, the author considers the tale plots with transfigurations and the peculiarities of using number symbols in them.
