Abstract: The paper describes how Ivan Bunin created his short story «The Goddess of Reason» which deals with the events of the Great French Revolution using the book «Paris révolutionnaire: Vieilles maisons, vieux papiers» by G. Lenôtre as his source. The resulting miniature could have become part of Bunin’s fictional prose. However, the author includes it in his collection of non-fictional works «Under the Sickle and the Hammer» because he believes his task to be in restoring the true biographic facts relating to the actress Thérèse-Angélique Aubry and because he believes himself to be a true witness of the Russian revolution which was a repetition of the French one.
