Abstract: The article focuses on the motif of a secluded place in the prose of the British novelist John Fowles (1926–2005) and its autopoetic interpretation. Special emphasis is laid on the language techniques of implementing a motif under investigation, which ensure formal cohesion and content integrity of the motif in diachronic perspective, as well as textual implementation of the image of a secluded place, the matrix image of John Fowles’ «inner language».

Keywords: john fowles, motif, autopoesis, matrix image, language technique
