Abstract: The article deals with the problem of intertextual interaction of E. Bulwer-Lytton’s Newgate novel «Eugene Aram» and F.M. Dostoyevskiy’s novel «Crime and Punish-ment». On the basis of literary analysis it has been revealed not only significant similarities of two novels but also sufficient differences, conditioned by the difference in the writers’ outlook, levels of their talents, different literary traditions and periods. Nevertheless, one could state that the Newgate novel was accepted by the Russian literature through its problems and plot-structure without being adopted completely.
