Abstract: Being of just convential nature, the distinction between the concept of «language» and «dialect» may nevertheless be useful or even nessesary in research practice. The Low German Plautdietsch, the language of Mennonites, spoken all over the world, is proposed to be considered as neither a mere dialect nor any national variety of German but rather as «daughter language» of the latter for both structural and cultural reasons, thus taking (along with Afrikaans and Jiddish) a special place of its own among other Germanic languages.

Keywords: language, dialect, afrikaans, jiddish, plutdietsch
