Abstract: The article deals with the figurative meanings of the verbs melt and cook. These verbs are analyzed using the main principles of Case Grammar. We suggest our classification of case roles and semantic patterns of the utterances with the verbs under analysis in the correlation with the syntactic models. The aim of this article is to prove that depending on the context the verbs melt and cook can be considered to be synonyms from the point of view of the syntactic structures they are used in and the case roles assigned to their arguments.
