Abstract:

The present study examines archival materials from the Natalya Demkova collection, a portion of which was transferred to Novosibirsk in 2018. These collections primarily focus on Demkova’s core research interest: the literary heritage of Archpriest Avvakum. Notably, this study introduces a typescript of her 1969 candidate dissertation, “The Life of Archpriest Avvakum. Literary History of the Text” (Leningrad, 1969), into scholarly discourse for the first time. The typescript contains not only the author’s revisions but also annotations in a distinct hand, identified as belonging to Varvara Adrianova-Peretz. While Demkova conducted a significant portion of her research independently following the death of her supervisor, Igor Eremin, the collection reveals the profound influence of Adrianova-Peretz, who served as the editor-in-chief of the monograph on Avvakum. A comprehensive evaluation of the dissertation reveals that Adrianova-Peretz played a pivotal role in its preparation, despite lacking formal supervisory status. Additionally, the collection comprises early drafts of a projected book that was to explore Archpriest Avvakum and the folk traditions of Russia in the 17th century. This literary endeavor had been conceptualized by Demkova since the mid-1980s. These documents also underscore the significant impact of Adrianova-Peretz’s scientific expertise on Demkova’s work. Notably, the title of the book concerned is a reference to the “Russian Democratic Satire of the 17th Century,” and the thematic scope of the collected materials clearly reflects the influence of Adrianova-Peretz’s seminal works on the relationship between Russian literature and folklore.
