Abstract: The monograph under review considers an explanatory sentence as one of the most significant phenomena of Russian syntax. This review analyzes the scientific approach of T. I. Steksova and T. V. Shmeleva. They define an explanatory sentence as a semantic rather than a constructive type of sentence and place it in the space of various discourses. The monograph provides an extensive and, in some cases, detailed description of words and integral lexical combinations used as a basic lexical component in the modus part of an explanatory sentence. Notice should be made of the original concept and elaborate characterization of the different types of explanatory sentences. The scientific significance of the reviewed monograph is that it summarizes the experience of describing the expletive sentence in syntactic studies of the twentieth century. In addition, the work reflects the modern stage of understanding the mentioned type of syntactic units, comprehending it in the coordinates of syntactic and lexical semantics, the constructive potential of Russian syntax, and its functioning in different types of discourse.
