Abstract:

The paper discusses the correlation between articulatory-acoustic tunings and their auditory perception based on the material of two vowel phonemes, /ø/ and /ʏ/, of the Baraba-Tatar language. According to Z. N. Dzhaparidze, it is perceptual phonetics that underlies the phonemic analysis of speech. In the course of the work, a comprehensive approach to experimental-phonetic research was used (MRI imaging, acoustic speech analysis, perceptual recognition). The study material was audio files recorded in the field and at the laboratory, an MRI data-base of Barabians, and a specially designed questionnaire with examples of target sounds in different phonetic contexts. Articulatory characteristics of the Baraba-Tatar phonemes /ø/ and /ʏ/ were determined, and formant parameters of their allophones were revealed. The results of the perception and recognition study of the vowels in question allowed several preliminary conclusions to be drawn. These are: 1) listeners determine the sound type more accurately, rather than a specific sound; 2) the labialization/non-labialization of the vowel is recognized better than its row and rise; 3) less-noise consonants, especially j, make it difficult for listeners to recognize the vowel. The perceptual experiment data analysis has revealed a number of questions that will serve as the basis for further research in this area. Although the peculiarities of oral Russian speech perception are extensively examined, our findings represent the first step in depicting the perceptual characteristics of the Southern-Siberian Turkic languages.
