Abstract:

The review presents a two-volume fundamental academic study: “А History of Ural literature. 19th century” prepared by the Ural scientific institutes: Institute of History and Archeology (Yekaterinburg), Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Komi Scientific Center (Syktyvkar), Udmurt Institute of History, Language and Literature (Izhevsk). This study presents a complete history of the literature of the Urals of the period in question not only today but also for many decades to come. An interesting and innovative concept of building the history of regional literature with its theoretical foundations and practical implementation was applied. An overview of the chapters devoted to ethnic, cultural, and literary geolocations of the “Big Urals” (Bashkir, Komi, Udmurt literature), as well as sections devoted to Russian literature and travelogues, is provided. An important part of the concept is the analysis of the literary process in its stadial development. Of great interest are the ideas of the authors about the specifics of literature remote from the center and approaches to the “second-row” literature determining the peculiarity of regional culture. Also, a number of positive points are identified that are the result of the remoteness from the mainstream of “big” Russian literature.
