Abstract: The paper describes the changes that have occurred in Chalkan phonetics over the past 70 years. The vocal system data collected by N. A. Baskakov are compared with recent research data of Siberian experimental phonetics. Specific differences between the Chalkan phonetic systems and other Siberian languages are revealed. Also, the phonetic processes that are currently taking place in the modern Chalkan language are described. Chalkan hard vowels, much like vowels of other languages analyzed, are mostly seen as centralback vowels with varying degrees of advancement. Chalkan soft vowels are closer to the Altai-Kizhi language. In terms of how open or close they are, the Chalkan vowels are similar to vowels of Standard Altai. The most narrow vocalism is observed in the Sagai dialect of the Khakas language and the Tuba dialect of the Altai language. The widest vocalism is found in the Kumandy dialect (Altai) and Kachin dialect (Khakas). The following processes are observed in modern Chalkan: vowel length formed as a result of contraction is lost in many words; mixed variants of labial harmony are observed in many words with wide vowels; the process of palatal harmony reconstruction is taking place.
