ArticleName: The phenomena of indirect communication in modern languages (Russian, English, German) Authors: Alexander P. Maryukhin Institute of Linguistic Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russian Federation In the section Linguistics
Abstract: What we hope to have accomplished with the introductory discussion is to show the importance of the phenomenon that we call indirect communication, double meaning or hedging for different areas of language use. We readily admit the difficulty connected with these concepts. We determine that their use originates in logic and semantics, but has lately been developed further in pragmatics and discourse analysis so far that it now extends to areas like metacommunication and to communication strategies like mitigation and politeness. The article also demonstrates the various perspectives – some more theoretical, some more practical – from which hedging, indirect communication, double meaning can be considered, thus suggesting directions for future research.
