Abstract: One of the major problems of Soviet everyday life of the 1920–30-ies was a «housing problem» that became the focus of the Russian literature. The paper analyses the «housing shortage» motive through the category of time, which reflects the mood of the epoch related to the perception of life and varies depending on the beliefs of writers and their relationship to the victorious political regime. The future is not always clear and may be perceived critically or with the hope of the radical improvement. The past is idealized or taken as an example of narrow-mindedness and vulgarity and thus becomes an argument in favor of the changes that ultimately shocked the Everyman. The present, however, which is characterized as a disorder, is understood as a transition period.
