ArticleName: About semantic development of the adjectives formed from place names in the Russian language (at the example of the history of the word «Moscow» («Muscovite»)) Authors: E. V. Generalova In the section Linguistics
Abstract: Basing on the semantic evolution of an adjective Moscow (Muscovite) in Old Russian language and further in the language of the XVIII century, XIX century and modern Russian, the paper analyses the regularities of the semantic development of the adjectives formed from place names. The research shows that the lexical meaning of the adjectives formed from place names can’t be described as exclusively relative and appears to include a number of typical and specific meanings, their number and correlation changing with time in concrete words and in the lexical group in whole. The formation of the semantic structure of the word Moscow (Muscovite) which took place in the Russian of 16–17th centuries is described in details. There is an updating of semantic structure during the development of semantics of such adjectives in Russian language of the national period while the majority of standard meanings are preserved. Also there is a development of semantics which is becoming qualitative and a tendency to stereotypisation. Keywords: adjectives-derivations from toponyms, the russian language of 16–17th centuries, modern russian, semantics, ethno stereotypes Bibliography: Gorpinich V. A.
