Abstract: The article is devoted to the normative assessment of the verbal variants мерить(ся) – мерять(ся) and мучить(ся) – мучать(ся) in the infinitive form, personal forms, and forms of the past tense. The conclusion that the variants мерять(ся) and мучать(ся) are inconsistent with the orthographic norm is made on the basis of the analysis of codifying sources and writing practice; therefore, the Council of Experts of the «Total dictation» has decided to consider these variants as incorrect. According to the authors of the article, the resolution of such matters is related to the general problem of the appropriate variability in orthography.

Keywords: orthography, codification, norm, variability, literacy assessment criteria, total dictation
