ArticleName: Folklore genres terminology translated from Russian into English: experience of the series «Monuments of Folklore of the Peoples of Siberia and the Far East» Authors: Yu. V. Limorenko In the section Study of folklore
Abstract: The paper considers the ways and variants of translating the Russian terms, designating folklore genres, into English based on the translations of the summaries in the volumes of the Series «Monuments...». Study is made of the correspondences between the terms «сказка», «миф», «легенда», «предание» and their contextual equivalents «tale», «story», «myth», «legend». The closest correspondence is revealed between the term «миф» and the word myth. The relations of the term “сказка” to the words tale and story are more ambiguous: often the term «сказка» has as a contextual equivalent the word story though its field of meanings is much wider. The most divergent in meanings are the terms «легенда» and «предание», and the word legend. The author proposes to establish these correspondences in the further translation practice based on lexicological data and the forming tradition with the aim of gradual consolidation of the mutual one-tooneness of the terms. Keywords: translation theory, terminology, folklore of the peoples of siberia, folklore genres, russian-english translation adequacy Bibliography: |
