Abstract: The paper is devoted to the reception of Chekhov’s plays at the Tomsk theatre in the late XIX – early XX century. The research is conducted on the material of theatre reviews published in the newspapers «Sibirsky Vestnik» and «Sibirskaya Zhizn» from 1889 to 1909. The paper defines the role of Chekhov's plays («Ivanov», «The Seagull», «Uncle Vanya», «The Cherry Orchard») in the repertoire of the Tomsk theatre, traces the history of their performances and considers the problems of perception of Chekhov's plays that the local theatre critics and theatre-goers faced. The paper also discusses the influence of the general features of theatre business development in Siberia on the reception of Chekhov’s plays in Tomsk.

Keywords: plays by a. p. chekhov, tomsk theatre, tomsk periodicals
