Abstract: The present paper is devoted to the poetics of the early works by F. M. Dostoyevsky, namely, to the specificity of the German theme in the author’s works. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of German characters in the story «The Double»: the interpretation of the principle of German characters’ denomination, the description of their role in the plot, the character’s connection with the folk culture, with the tradition of the folk puppet show (Petrushka’s theatre). «The German world» in the story «The Double» is represented by Krestian Ivanovich and Carolina Ivanovna, who form the tradition of the «literary Germans’» representation in F. M. Dostoyevsky’s subsequent works. Also marked out is the specifics of the intertextual connection of the said story with N. V. Gogol’s work «The Overcoat», interpretation is given to the function of Karolina Ivanovna, to whom the important person goes in the final. The peculiarity of the dramatic nature of Dostoyevsky’s story «The Double» is characterized in the context of analyzing the system of images.
