Abstract: The paper identifes music signs in L. Leonov’s novel «Russian Forest» (1955): musical background, description (musical ecphrasis) of musical performances, and references to works of musical art, which create a musical associative background. An interpretation is given for the functions of musical images (mimetic, attributive, and symbolic) and their association with the different levels of the artistic world (the characters, narration, and author). Music is part of the sounds context of the novel’s world, as it is perceived by the characters, and an element of the plot, the perception of music reveals the inner spiritual world of the characters and the relationship between nature, folk culture, and world culture (romantic and baroque). The system of sound symbols creates the author’s model of the world and introduces a new semantic code for understanding the situations of the novel within a universal context.
