Abstract: «Inspector» – is the first completed Gogol’s Comedy, and it equally belongs to the masterpieces of theater and literature. Conscious research of the author resulted in the organic unity of theatrical and literary laws of deployment of conceived plot. This article is devoted to the first phase of the evolution of genre thinking of the playwright – the first three, unsuccessful attempts. In 1831 romantic drama in prose conceived in literary models of genre was unfinished, in 1832 – theatrical farce «Grooms», followed by a comedy «Vladimir 3rd degree», which was the first attempt to combine the literary and the theatrical model of the genre in author's strategy. Gogol’s search of dramaturgical language, equally adequate to the needs of literature and theatre, is considered in the context of the impact on Russian literature of the ideas of French romantics to reform drama laws.
