ArticleName: ON THE ROLE OF VISIONS IN HAGIOGRAPHIC NARRATION (EXAMPLES OF STORIES ABOUT THE VISION IN THE LIVES OF CYRIL AND THERAPONT BELOZERSKY) Authors: T. I. Kovaleva Institute of Philology of the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk, Russian Federation In the section
Abstract: The article analyzes the episodes of the Lives of Cyril and Therapont Belozersky containing identical stories about the vision. The author of Therapont’s Life introduces Cyril and almost literally replicates description of the saint’s religious retreat from his Life without making Therapont the visionary unlike the authors of the other North Russian Lives using the story about the vision of Cyril. The vision that was revealed to Cyril justifies and sanctifies Cyril and Therapont’s religious retreat made without the Abbot’s blessing. And while the author of Cyril’s Life pays attention to the feat of his hero, the сreator of Therapont’s Life intentionally connects the fates of two different heroes in the narrative with a common event, emphasizing the continuity of their spiritual affinity and the theme of continuity in the service of God, fundamental for the concept of this writing.
